Your Customers Are Asking ChatGPT What to Buy. Does It Know Your Store Exists?

E-commerce6 min read

People now ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Copilot what to buy. Learn what changed in 2026, why some online stores get left out, and the simple fixes that help AI find your products.

Think about how you bought something recently. Did you type it into Google and open a few tabs? Or did you ask an AI, say "best running shoes for daily use under ₹5,000", and look at the three it picked?

More and more people do the second. And when the AI picks three stores, the shop that isn't on the list doesn't get a second chance. The customer never knew it was there.

That's the worry behind this post. Here's what actually changed this year, why some stores get left out, and what you can do about it without learning a word of jargon.

What Changed in 2026

Three things happened close together.

  • ChatGPT stopped selling inside the chat. In September 2025, OpenAI let people buy from some stores without leaving ChatGPT. By March 2026 it had pulled back. OpenAI said it was "allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences" while it focuses "on product discovery". In plain words: ChatGPT finds the product, then sends the shopper to your website to pay.
  • Google went the other way. In January 2026, Google announced checkout inside AI Mode and the Gemini app for eligible US retailers, built with Shopify, Etsy, Walmart and Target. Google says the retailer "remains the seller of record", and by May 2026 it was planning a rollout to Canada, Australia and later the UK.
  • Shopify switched it on for everyone it could. Shopify's "Agentic storefronts" feature is on by default for eligible stores. It puts your products in front of ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's assistants. For ChatGPT, Shopify's own help page says shoppers "complete their purchase on your online store checkout".

Notice the pattern. Even with all the AI noise, the sale still happens on your website most of the time. That's good news, and it's also the catch.

The Good News: You Still Own the Sale

The AI is a very picky shop window. It reads about your products, decides which ones answer the question, and sends the shopper through your door.

So the question isn't "will AI replace my store?" It won't. The question is: when the AI looks at your store, does it find anything it can use?

Why a Store Gets Left Out

When we look at stores that don't show up, it's almost never because they're bad shops. It's usually one of these.

1. The product information is thin. "White sneakers, size 9" tells an AI nothing about running, wide feet or rainy roads. The AI can only recommend what it can understand. Google's own advice is that "strong product descriptions are critical for brands to get discovered in the AI era".

2. The price or stock is wrong somewhere. OpenAI's merchant docs are built around feeds with "up-to-date price and availability". If your website says one price and your feed says another, or the item is sold out, the AI will quietly pick a store it trusts.

3. The product data isn't in a form a machine can read. Humans read a page. AI tools read structured data behind the page, and product feeds you send to Google and OpenAI. A pretty page with no structured data is invisible to the machine.

4. The site blocks AI tools or loads too slowly. Some stores block every bot to save bandwidth. That can block the one that was about to recommend you. We wrote about how to tell helpful bots from harmful ones.

5. Nobody turned the channel on. On Shopify this is a setting. On WooCommerce, Magento or a custom store, it's a feed you have to set up. Many owners don't know it exists.

What to Do This Month

You don't need a new website for this. Most of it is housekeeping.

  1. Rewrite your top 20 product descriptions as if answering a customer's question. Who is it for, what problem does it solve, what's in the box, what are the sizes. One honest paragraph beats ten bullet points of model numbers.
  2. Check that price and stock match everywhere. Your product page, your Google Merchant Center feed, and any marketplace listing should agree. Fix the ones that don't.
  3. Make sure your products have structured data. Shopify themes include it. On WooCommerce and Magento it depends on the theme and plugins. Google's Rich Results Test will tell you in a minute.
  4. If you're on Shopify, open Sales Channels in your admin and confirm Agentic storefronts is active. Read the terms before you accept them.
  5. If you're on WooCommerce, Magento or a custom platform, keep your Google Merchant Center feed clean, and apply to OpenAI's merchant programme. Feeds there are currently limited to approved partners, so apply early.
  6. Don't block the search bots. Check your robots file and firewall rules for OpenAI's search bot and Google's crawlers. Blocking scrapers is fine. Blocking the shop window is not.

One Honest Note

Nobody can promise you a spot in ChatGPT's or Google's answers. The AI companies don't sell placement to small stores, and they change how things work every few months. Anyone who guarantees it is guessing.

What you can do is remove the reasons to be skipped. Clear descriptions, correct prices, readable data, a fast open site. Those help with normal Google search too, so the work isn't wasted even if AI shopping changes again next year.

FAQs

Will AI shopping replace my online store?

No. ChatGPT now sends shoppers to your website to buy. Google can complete the sale inside AI Mode, but you remain the seller and the order is yours. Your store is still where the money is made.

Do I have to pay to appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Mode?

Not for the basic listing. Google's free product listings and Shopify's channel cost nothing extra. Paid ads exist on both, but the fixes in this post are about being found, not about advertising.

I'm on WooCommerce. Am I at a disadvantage against Shopify stores?

A little, because Shopify turned the connection on for its merchants. You can close most of the gap with a clean Google Merchant Center feed, proper structured data, and an application to OpenAI's merchant programme.

How do I know if my store is showing up?

Ask the AI tools yourself. Type the questions your customers would ask and see who gets recommended. Do it monthly and keep a note. Google's Merchant Center is also adding reports on how products perform in AI surfaces.
